Quattrone, G., Briguglio, C., Bandyopadhyay, S. & Peña López, R., 2024. Heres: A Digital Construction Manual to Support Earth-Built Heritage Resilience in Southern Morocco, English & Arabic, University of Liverpool.

About the Flipbook

This digital, interactive, multimedia construction manual, designed as a flipbook and conceived as an e-publication, documents the traditional earth building techniques of Southern Morocco, with the aim to support the transmission and application of the material knowledge and craftsmanship underpinning them in the face of rapid socio-economic change, migration and aridification. The manual also sheds light on the socio-cultural and religious practices associated with the execution of the four building techniques as well as the hidden role played by women.

Videos of four techniques – mud bricks, rammed earth, tadelakt and mud finishings – are complemented by step-by-step guidance while 3D animations and pop-up windows illustrate and describe, respectively, the tools required. A catalogue of key technical details assists the design, planning and execution of earth construction, thus making it more apt to withstand the test of time, change and natural events, while a glossary of terms complements the information provided throughout.

Available in both English and Moroccan Arabic (coming soon), Heres can be navigated offline on both computers and touch screen devices as follows:
– on computers use the free app Thorium Reader;
– on Android mobile devices use the free app Lithium;
– on Apple mobile devices use Books.
