LSA launches IHBC-accredited MA in Sustainable Heritage Management
The Liverpool School of Architecture is set to launch a new, accredited programme in Sustainable Heritage Management in September 2021.
Fully recognised by the Institute of Historic Building Conservation (IHBC) – the principal body representing conservation professionals in the UK – the programme will equip students to master all aspects of sustainable heritage management theory and practice. It considers the moral and ethical issues that are inherent in heritage, alongside the operational dimension.
Core modules cover the concepts, principles and practice of sustainable heritage management alongside sustainability, tourism, conservation and regeneration, offering a truly global perspective thanks to the specialisms of the leading heritage academics and practitioners behind the programme, including programme director Dr Ataa Alsalloum.
A range of optional modules will allow students to pursue their own specific interests, including the opportunity to undertake a professional placement within the broader heritage and cultural industries, or with researchers and specialists.
Full recognition by the IHBC confirms that the programme covers its areas of competence. It also follows the education guidelines of the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS), UNESCO and Council of Europe requirements. Graduates will be able to apply for full IHBC membership after 2 years of professional experience, as opposed to 5 years.
Liverpool is uniquely placed to deliver such a programme, thanks to its status as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The University was also the first in the UK to offer a RIBA-accredited course in Architecture, and is home to the Centre for the Study of Architecture and Cultural Heritage of India, Arabia and the Maghreb (ArCHIAM).
Applications for the MA Sustainable Heritage Management are now open. Further information about the programme can be found on the course page.
